Great piece, TJ.

I especially appreciate the part about living in and for the moment, not for the future or a promised success story. Eminem's character didn't rap for a record deal, or for fame, or any of that. He rapped because he loved to rap. Too many times kids think that they get scouted and play in the NBA, or they've failed as a basketball player. They overlook that playing basketball well should be the goal.

If you love what you do, doing it well should be the payoff. Anything else, any other goal, is not only naive, but utterly self-abusive.

Thanks, TJ.

I agree with this...but his true 8 Mile story did end with an agent in the audience. He was at Rap Olympics and he actually lost the battle (even though he was clearly the best). Jimmy Lovine happened to be there and showed his demo to Dre and Dre jumped on it right away. Though diliegence, set backs, trials and struggle are expected, our environment always plays a huge role. I am finishing up a great book "Outliers" by Gladwell and he dives into this very thing with an enormous amount of useful info. I certainly dont mean to de-edify or contradict your great and truthful words and thank you for sharing them with me! Cheers!
